Golf Physical Screening
‘We don’t believe there is one way to swing a golf club; we believe there are an infinite number of ways to swing a club. But we do believe that there is one efficient way for all golfers to swing a club and it is based on what they can physically do’
Titleist Performance institute philosophy
So what is golf screening and why is it so important?
Golf physical screening is the musculoskeletal assessment of the physical attributes required to optimally swing a golf club. The results of the screening process will identify and isolate physical limitations that you may have which could affect your swing efficiency, leading to an inconsistent swing pattern, reduced power/ distance, poor performance and in more severe cases injury.
So who is the golf screening most suitable for?
Golf screening can benefit both professional and amateur golfers alike. It can be beneficial to people who are looking to improve performance or who are suffering with golf related injuries. The screening tool can be used for golfers of all ages and all capabilities.
The golf screening is suitable for players who would like to:
• Improve performance
• Prevent injury
• Look for longevity in the sport.
What will the results of the screening tell me?
The results of the screening will be able to identify if the player has any significant structural, postural or mechanical restrictions.
Physical limitations can contribute to:
• Loss of posture during the swing e.g. early extension
• Inconsistent swing path leading to poor club face alignment at impact
• Poor balance
• The feeling of being trapped or stuck
• Swing faults such as the push/ pull, hook/ slice
• The shank
• Reduced power and distance
What happens after the screening?
On completion of the screening the results are discussed with the player and are put into a golfing context. A full report is compiled and sent via e-mail to the player and to their golf professional if desired. A customized exercise programme is then developed according to the findings and issued to the player vial the MYTPI website. These are generally six weeks long. Review sessions may be necessary in order to progress the exercises optimising the players performance.
Will this affect the lessons I have with my golf club professional?
All players are encouraged to have lessons with their club professional. On completion of the screening the Titleist Performance Institute certified golf fitness professional can send a report to your club professional outlining the relevant findings and the outline of the conditioning program, this is to ensure consistency in your technical and conditioning program.
How long will the screening take?
A full golf specific musculoskeletal screening may take approximately 45 to 60 minutes depending on the individual needs of the player. Review sessions may range from 30 to 60 minutes. This is dependent on whether the sessions are one to one or in a group.
