Welcome to Bodysym
What to expect…
You will be greeted by our receptionist who will ask you to complete a simple form so that your personal details can be added to our computer system (please come 10 mins prior to your appointment time on your initial visit to ensure the full time with the therapist) Relax in the waiting room with a magazine until you are called by the therapist.
You therapist will then introduce themselves and take you through to a private consulting room. Your privacy is of paramount importance to us (you will not find curtain cubicles or poorly fitting partition walls in our establishment!!) All conversations and records are kept confidential unless released to another medical professional with your consent.
In order to fully understand your condition your physiotherapist will spend some time listening and asking you more specific questions about the type and behaviour of your symptoms. You will also be able to discuss any reports or other investigations that may have been ordered by your GP or consultant
The physical examination is an essential part of developing your clinical diagnosis. This will generally consist of observing your posture and biomechanics, asking you to perform various movements and actions, undertaking specific tests, and palpating the areas around the area of your symptoms. The examination will vary from person to person taking into account the severity and nature of your complaint
By the end of this process your physiotherapist will have a good idea of the source of your symptoms, the contributing factors, and an appropriate management plan.
Your physiotherapist will then take time to discuss the findings of your examination. We feel that an essential part of any successful management plan is that you as the patient fully understands what is wrong, the reasons behind it, and how we both work to make things better. We fully appreciate that nobody understands his or her own body better than the person whose body it is, which is why we feel it is important that any diagnosis and management plan must be agreed and formulated together.
This may consist of various soft tissue techniques, joint mobilizations or manipulation. An individual exercise program will also be devised and you will be given full printed instructions so you don’t have to try and remember every single thing. We will also discuss with you time frame for your recovery and the expectations you should have.
Our main aim of course is to achieve this as quickly as possible.
What should you wear?
Our main aim is to ensure that you are happy and comfortable.
Visualizing the area in question is important but your modesty is our paramount concern. Loose fitting clothing will allow us to move areas freely. For lower limb problems shorts and bare feet is best, and for neck, shoulder and arm problems vest tops allow us to freely examine the whole of the upper limb and neck region. For lower back problems shorts or loose fitting trousers elastic waists are perfect.
Of course we are happy to provide a chaperone if you would prefer, and we will always allow you time to change in private if you need.
(Don't worry if you forget, we will always have a stock of clean sportswear in the clinic you can use.)
Should you bring anything?
Please bring with you the results of any investigations you have had done and any medications you are taking. Although if you have been referred by your GP or consultant it is likely that they have outlined any relevant findings or informationin your referral letter.
You should also bring with you the details of your health insurance if you have it.
